We’ll wield big stick against corrupt legislators — ICPC

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has vowed to tackle corruption within state Houses of Assembly.

ICPC Chairman Musa Aliyu made this commitment on Tuesday in Abuja during the opening of a three-day workshop for Jigawa State legislators. The workshop, titled “Transparency and Accountability: Effective Legislative Tools Towards Successful Mandate Delivery,” aimed at enhancing legislative practices.

Aliyu raised concerns about widespread corruption in the country and underscored the need for legislators to maintain integrity in their public and private roles. He assured that the ICPC is committed to working with state legislatures to effectively combat corruption.

“We are ready to collaborate with state legislatures in our fight against corruption, just as we have with other government branches and levels,” Aliyu stated. “We will, however, take decisive action when necessary.”

He emphasized that the ICPC will continue its mandate of enforcement, prevention, public education, and mass mobilization while adhering to legal boundaries. Aliyu stressed the importance of prioritizing national interest, as highlighted by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, over personal or collective interests.

“The separation of powers must be respected; any encroachment on the roles of the executive or judiciary undermines democracy and good governance,” Aliyu added.

He noted that the legislature is expected to detect and address waste, inefficiency, corruption, and mismanagement of public resources. Achieving these goals requires transparency and accountability, which the workshop aims to promote.
