Lagos: Thugs threaten residents ahead of August hunger protest

Suspected thugs have begun threatening Lagos State residents, warning them against joining the hunger protest scheduled from August 1 to 10.

In a viral video released on Tuesday, unidentified voices warned market traders and others to stay away from the protest, suggesting it could lead to more chaos than the #EndSARS demonstrations.

“Anyone who is confident should come out on Thursday to protest. Are you the only one hungry? If you dare come out for the protest, you will be mercilessly dealt with,” the voices in the video threatened.

This situation comes in the wake of a directive from Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, who has instructed senior police officers to ensure the safety of participants in the upcoming #EndBadGovernance protest.

Egbetokun’s order was in response to a request from human rights lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa.

On July 26, 2024, Adegboruwa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, wrote to the IGP requesting police protection for the protesters.

The IGP responded positively in a letter dated July 29, 2024, directing senior officers to address the request made on behalf of the Take It Back Movement, one of the groups organizing the protest.
