Court Jails Man Six Months For Stealing Three Tubers Of Yam in Osun

An Osun State Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Osogbo, the state capital, has sentenced an aluminum worker, Sunday Ejoh, to six months in prison for stealing three tubers of yam.

The case, heard by Magistrate Mr. M. Olatunji, involved the theft valued at N3000.

Prosecutor Mr. Jacob Akintunde explained that on September 22nd, 2024, Ejoh stole the yam from Oluwole Durojaye.

The court was informed that the stolen tubers, along with a cutlass and a pair of slippers, were recovered from Ejoh.

The charge against him was under “Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Law of Osun State, Nigeria 2002.”

Without legal representation, Ejoh pleaded guilty, attributing his actions to hunger: “I was hungry, and I have a family.”

In delivering the judgment, Magistrate Olatunji found Ejoh guilty and imposed a six-month prison term, with an option of a N25,000 fine.

Additionally, he ordered that the stolen yam be returned to its owner.
