Lagos GAC convenes to decide fate of sacked Speaker Obasa

The Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is set to convene an urgent meeting today to discuss the fate of the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.

The meeting, scheduled to take place at the Lagos House Marina, follows the ongoing leadership dispute in the state legislature.

Led by Pa Tajudeen Olusi, with President Bola Tinubu serving as its lifetime patron, the GAC is the highest decision-making body within the Lagos APC. Its decisions have a significant influence on party matters and have historically been pivotal in resolving disputes.

One of the main topics of discussion will be Obasa’s removal as Speaker of the House of Assembly. On January 13, 2025, 32 out of the 40 members of the Assembly voted to oust him, citing allegations of financial mismanagement, misconduct, and autocratic leadership. His deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, was appointed as the new Speaker following his removal.

However, the removal of Obasa has led to mixed reactions, with some members of the GAC expressing concerns over the process. Muraina Taiwo, a GAC member from Isolo Constituency, criticized the lawmakers for reconvening during the legislative recess to carry out the removal.

Senator Anthony Adefuye also argued that Obasa’s impeachment was illegal, while Musiliu Obanikoro, another GAC member, dismissed Adefuye’s claims as “reckless.”

The outcome of today’s meeting is expected to have a major impact on the political future of Obasa and could affect the overall leadership dynamics within the Lagos APC.
