Peter Obi questions justification for 2025 budget increase

Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s decision to raise the 2025 budget from N49.7 trillion to N54.2 trillion.

In a statement on his X account, Obi argued that increasing the budget solely based on projected revenue growth is unjustifiable.

He pointed out that while the government has outlined expected revenue sources, it has not provided a corresponding breakdown of how the additional funds will be allocated.

Emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability, Obi urged the government to disclose a clear spending plan.

He stressed that public funds should be directed towards essential sectors such as healthcare, education, security, and poverty alleviation to ensure meaningful development.

He also noted that Nigerians are still awaiting a detailed report on the implementation of the 2024 budget to assess whether public funds were effectively utilized.

Obi called on the National Assembly to scrutinize past expenditures and make the findings public to ensure responsible financial management.

“As we consider the 2025 Budget of Restoration, it is crucial to prioritize transparency, accountability, and the well-being of Nigerians. This is essential for our nation’s growth and future,” he stated.
