A 26-year-old woman, identified as Rachael, has confessed to selling her two-week-old baby for N600,000 due to financial difficulties. However, investigations revealed that the child was actually sold for N4 million to a 42-year-old woman seeking to adopt a child.
Rachael, a resident of Asaba, Delta State, was paraded alongside two accomplices by the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, at the State Police Command. She explained that she already had one child and struggled to provide for both, leading her to give up her newborn daughter, whom she delivered on January 27, 2025.
“The father of the baby denied responsibility, and I was left alone to care for the child. I was struggling, doing menial jobs like cleaning people’s compounds to survive,” Rachael said.
She disclosed that she was introduced to a woman who offered to help, eventually giving her N600,000 in exchange for the baby. From the money, Rachael said she gave the woman N30,000 as a token of appreciation.
However, further investigations revealed that the woman who brokered the deal actually sold the baby for N3.5 million but only gave Rachael a fraction of the amount.
Meanwhile, the 42-year-old woman who purchased the baby for N4 million claimed she was under the impression that she was undergoing a legal adoption process.
“I told a lady in my area that I wanted to adopt a child legitimately. I was assured that the documents for the adoption were being processed,” she said.
The police have launched an investigation into the case, with all parties involved now in custody.
