Elder statesman and prominent nationalist, Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo, has died at the age of 96.
The highly respected Yoruba leader passed away peacefully on the morning of Friday, February 14, 2025, at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State.
In a statement released on Friday, the family confirmed his demise, stating, “He passed away peacefully this morning, Friday, February 14, 2025, at his Lekki home in Lagos at the age of 96.”
Chief Adebanjo, a distinguished legal practitioner, former organising secretary of the Action Group, and national leader of Afenifere, is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, as well as his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
The family paid tribute to his enduring dedication to justice and equity, saying, “His unwavering commitment to truth and fairness, along with his relentless pursuit of a better Nigeria, remained steadfast until his final moments.”
Consultations are ongoing with his associates and various stakeholders to plan a befitting farewell. Further details regarding the funeral arrangements will be announced in due time.
Condolence registers have been made available at his Lekki residence and his country home in Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
