At least 805 people have lost their lives to violence and insecurity across Nigeria in the first six weeks of 2025, highlighting the country’s ongoing security challenges.
Among the casualties are 28 soldiers, five police officers, and an official of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), according to data compiled by Nigeria Insecurity Tracker (NIT), a project by Dataxpat.com that monitors violent incidents through media reports.
The tracker records attacks driven by political, economic, and social grievances, as well as state responses to these threats.
However, the actual death toll could be higher, as some incidents go unreported, including cases where kidnapped victims are later killed.
In response, the military has intensified its operations. In the second week of January, troops reportedly neutralized 156 terrorists and arrested 464 suspects. By the end of January, the total number of terrorists killed stood at 358, with 431 arrests.
Despite the grim figures, the 805 deaths recorded so far mark a decline from the 1,525 deaths reported during the same period in 2021, suggesting that security efforts may be making an impact.
