Two suspected killers of Anambra lawmaker flee from police custody

The Anambra State Police Command has initiated a manhunt for two suspects linked to the murder of Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, who managed to escape from police custody.

Confirming the development in a statement on Tuesday night, the command’s spokesperson, Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, acknowledged growing concerns over security lapses in the state.

Justice Azuka was abducted by gunmen on December 24, 2024.

After weeks of search efforts, a joint security team discovered his decomposed body on February 6 near the Second Niger Bridge in Onitsha.

Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of nine individuals suspected of involvement in the crime.

According to Ikenga, the escape happened when police operatives escorted the two suspects on a mission to apprehend an alleged buyer of stolen vehicles linked to the gang.

“During the operation, the receiver was successfully arrested, and two stolen vehicles were recovered.

However, the two suspects took advantage of the situation and fled,” Ikenga explained.

In response, the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered an immediate manhunt to recapture the fugitives.

He also directed disciplinary action against any officers found responsible for the security breach and assured the public that stringent measures are being enforced to ensure justice prevails.
