The United States has dismissed allegations that it provides financial support to Boko Haram, reiterating its commitment to aiding Nigeria in its fight against terrorism.
U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard M. Mills Jr., addressed the issue in Abuja on Thursday while speaking with journalists after a private meeting with Nigeria’s 36 state governors.
Describing the accusations as baseless and misleading, Mills stressed that the U.S. remains a strong ally in Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts.
“The United States categorically rejects any claims that it funds Boko Haram or any terrorist organization in Nigeria,” Mills stated.
“We stand with the Nigerian government and its people in their fight against terrorism and are committed to supporting efforts to eliminate the threat posed by Boko Haram and other extremist groups.”
His comments follow concerns sparked by U.S. Congressman Scott Perry, who suggested that USAID funds might have been misused to support terrorist organizations, including Boko Haram.
