Kidnapped NYSC member regains freedom after N1.1m ransom payment

A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Rofiat Lawal, who was abducted on Tuesday along the Benin-Ore Expressway, has been freed after her family paid a ransom of N1.1 million.

Lawal was on her way from Benin, Edo State, to Ibadan, Oyo State, for her primary assignment when she was kidnapped. The abductors initially demanded N20 million but later reduced it to N5 million after negotiations.

According to her friend, Agbakwara, the family struggled to raise the money. With support from her schoolmates, a Muslim association, hometown friends, and other donors, they managed to gather N1.1 million, which was handed over to a man named Isaac Ayo. He claimed his sister had also been kidnapped and promised to deliver the ransom.

Lawal and other hostages were eventually released late Friday night and taken to a hospital for medical care. By Saturday morning, she was safely reunited with her family.

Agbakwara expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed, spread the news, and informed the authorities, acknowledging their efforts in securing Lawal’s release.
