The Federal Government has instructed the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to remain vigilant and prevent criminals and terrorists from entering the country through the electronic visa system.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, delivered this directive on Friday in Abuja while inaugurating a two-week intensive training program for 162 selected immigration officers. The training is designed to enhance their skills in processing electronic visa applications.
Addressing the officers, the minister emphasized the importance of their duty in regulating entry into Nigeria. He warned against any form of compromise, stating that issuing visas to individuals with criminal backgrounds would not be tolerated. He also cautioned that any officer found negligent in their responsibilities would face severe consequences.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to attracting tourists, business professionals, and investors to boost economic development. However, he stressed that national security remains a top priority, and only eligible individuals should be granted visas.
Highlighting the critical role of immigration officers, he urged them to ensure a smooth and efficient visa process while maintaining strict security measures. He noted that their work directly influences Nigeria’s reputation as a business-friendly destination, impacting tourism and foreign investments.
The minister concluded by reiterating the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to national transformation. He made it clear that any actions jeopardizing security would not be tolerated, underscoring the government’s resolve to protect the country’s borders.
