Tensions erupted in Naka, the headquarters of Gwer-West Local Government Area in Benue State, as enraged protesters set fire to the palace of the Ter Nagi, Chief Daniel Abomtse, and the local government secretariat.
The unrest on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, was triggered by the killing of three members of the State Civil Protection Guards, allegedly by armed herdsmen in Gyaruwa community.
Reports indicate that the attackers stormed the area and fatally assaulted the security operatives.
Following the tragic incident, the bodies of the slain officers were brought to Naka, sparking outrage among residents, who took to the streets in protest.
In the course of the demonstration, some protesters resorted to arson, setting ablaze the traditional ruler’s palace and the local government office.
Benue State Police spokesperson, Catherine Anene, confirmed the development, stating that security forces have been deployed to restore calm.
“Information has been received about an ongoing protest in Naka, and the Commissioner of Police, alongside tactical teams, has moved to the area this morning to restore order,” Anene said, assuring that updates on the situation will be provided as events unfold.
