The Niger State Police Command has launched an investigation to track down a police officer accused of fatally shooting a resident while allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
The incident reportedly took place in the early hours of Monday in the Angwan-Kaje area of Chanchaga Local Government.
Witnesses claimed the officer, attached to the Maitumbi Police Station, had consumed excessive alcohol before picking up his rifle and firing randomly.
One of the bullets struck a resident identified as Sani, who was said to be asleep at the time. The officer allegedly attempted to shoot another person, a tea seller known as Mai Shayi, who managed to escape unhurt. Bullet casings were later recovered at the scene.
Reacting to the development, Commissioner of Police Shuwala Danmamman directed the Divisional Police Officer of Maitumbi to identify and apprehend the officer responsible.
State police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun confirmed that authorities received a report about the shooting around 3 a.m. on March 10, 2025.
He assured that a thorough investigation is ongoing, stating, “The Commissioner of Police has ordered the DPO Maitumbi to investigate and identify the officer responsible for further necessary action.”
Abiodun added that updates would be provided as the inquiry progresses.
