Senate asks INEC to hold by-elections in Edo, Anambra

The Senate has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct by-elections to fill the vacant Senate seats in Edo Central and Anambra South.

During Tuesday’s plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio officially declared both seats vacant and emphasized the importance of holding elections without delay.

“The seats are now vacant, and I urge INEC to organize elections in accordance with the constitution to fill them,” Akpabio stated.

INEC had previously mentioned in January 2025 that it was awaiting a formal request from the Senate before proceeding with the Anambra South by-election.

The district has been without a representative since July 2024, following the passing of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

Likewise, the Edo Central Senatorial seat became vacant after Senator Monday Okpebholo assumed office as the governor of Edo State in November 2024.
