Trader jailed nine months for stealing foodstuff, gas cooker, other items in Jos

A Magistrates’ Court in Jos has sentenced a 23-year-old trader, Joseph Peter, to nine months in prison for breaking into his neighbor’s house and stealing various items, including foodstuff and a gas cooker.

Presiding over the case on Wednesday, Magistrate Shawomi Bokkos convicted Peter after he admitted to charges of burglary and theft.

However, the court offered him the option of paying a N20,000 fine instead of serving the full sentence.

Additionally, the judge ordered Peter to compensate the complainant, Ngumut Jacob, with N130,000 for the stolen items.

During the trial, police prosecutor Ijuptil Thiawur informed the court that Jacob had reported the incident at the Anglo-Jos Police Station on January 11.

Investigations revealed that aside from the gas cooker and food supplies, Peter also took clothes, a laptop, and a mobile phone.
