Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has revealed that his decision to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) was made with the approval of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
El-Rufai announced his departure from the APC on March 10 via his social media pages, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for his exit.
In an interview with the BBC Hausa service, the former governor disclosed that he had consulted some of his political mentors before joining the SDP in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
He emphasized that Buhari was aware of his move and had given his blessing.
“I informed him of my intention to leave the APC because I always consult with him on important matters,” El-Rufai stated.
He further revealed that before making his decision, he presented a list of his commissioners to Buhari to ensure none had ever spoken ill of the former president.
According to El-Rufai, Buhari reviewed the list, approved it, and prayed for him.
“I always seek advice from certain people before making major decisions. If they ask me to refrain from something, I listen. My first political mentor is Muhammadu Buhari, but I won’t disclose the others to avoid external pressure,” he added.
