Vandals wreck transmission towers, trigger blackout in south-south

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has suffered another major disruption after vandals targeted and destroyed four transmission towers along the Owerri-Ahoada 132kV double circuit line.

The attack, which occurred around 6:23 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, led to the collapse of towers numbered T171 to T174, resulting in widespread power outages across Bayelsa State and parts of Rivers State.

TCN officials discovered the sabotage after a trial reclosure attempt failed, prompting engineers to inspect the transmission line.

Their assessment confirmed that the infrastructure had been deliberately damaged, cutting off the electricity supply to the Ahoada, Gbarain, and Yenagoa 132kV substations.

Emmanuel Apka, General Manager of TCN’s Port Harcourt region, led a team to evaluate the damage and assured residents that the company was mobilizing personnel and resources to repair the towers and restore power.

Reacting to the incident, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, strongly condemned the vandalism, describing it as a serious threat to Nigeria’s power sector.

She urged local communities to take an active role in safeguarding critical infrastructure, warning that such attacks could slow progress in improving electricity supply nationwide.
