JUST IN: Wike storms Abalama community in Rivers amid tension

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, arrived in Abalama, Asari-Toru Local Government Area, for a Thanksgiving Service and Civic Reception organized in his honor.

However, his visit was met with strong resistance from residents and the community’s traditional ruler.

Protesters took to the streets, blocking roads and carrying placards to express their discontent.

Many, including women and youths, voiced their rejection of Wike’s presence, referencing a past comment where he allegedly referred to the Kalabari people as a minority in Rivers State.

Videos circulating on social media captured the tense atmosphere as demonstrators insisted he was not welcome.

The Amayanabo of Abalama, King Dr. A. B. Big Tom Tom JP, also distanced himself from the event.

In a letter to the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, dated March 12, 2025, he stated that he was unaware of the program until it surfaced on social media. Citing security concerns, he made it clear that the community did not endorse the gathering.

Despite the resistance, Wike’s visit proceeded, underscoring the ongoing political tensions in the state.
