Newcastle ends trophy drought with hard-fought win over Liverpool

Newcastle United lifted the EFL Cup after a determined 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak sealed the win, while Federico Chiesa’s late effort for Liverpool proved insufficient to turn the tide.

The triumph ended Newcastle’s 56-year wait for a major trophy, their last success coming in the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

It was also their first domestic title in 70 years, following their 1955 FA Cup victory.

Liverpool, appearing in their 15th final in the competition, rested Alisson Becker in favour of Caoimhin Kelleher and brought in Jarrell Quansah for the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Newcastle, missing suspended Anthony Gordon, saw Harvey Barnes take his place.

Both teams started with attacking intent, with Newcastle coming close through Jacob Murphy and Sandro Tonali.

Burn eventually broke the deadlock just before halftime with a precise header, giving the Magpies a deserved lead.

Newcastle continued pressing in the second half, and Isak extended their advantage in the 54th minute after his initial goal was disallowed by VAR.

Liverpool made late substitutions, bringing on Darwin Núñez and Curtis Jones, but Nick Pope’s saves kept them at bay.

Despite Chiesa pulling one back in added time, Newcastle stood firm to claim victory, breaking a streak of five cup final defeats and earning their first win over Liverpool in 18 attempts.

The triumph also made their manager the first English coach to win a major trophy since 2008.
