Police inspector dies after shooting self on duty

A police inspector assigned to special duty at Goodwill Ceramic Company in Igbesa, Ogun State, has died after allegedly shooting himself while on duty, the state police command has confirmed.

The incident, which took place on March 14, 2025, at approximately 1:20 p.m., involved Inspector Ajele Oloyede, who was attached to the 78 Police Mobile Force (PMF) in Zamfara State.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, disclosed that authorities have launched an investigation to establish the factors surrounding Oloyede’s apparent suicide.

Initial findings suggest that Tolorunloju Stephen, an officer from the Force Headquarters Annex in Lagos who was also on special duty at the company, found Oloyede resting his head on a table in the security office.

After exchanging greetings and asking about his condition, Oloyede reportedly assured him that he was fine.

However, moments later, Oloyede allegedly turned his rifle on himself and pulled the trigger.

The police statement revealed that Stephen, who had briefly stepped away to use the restroom, was startled by the sound of a gunshot.

Rushing back, he discovered Oloyede in a pool of blood.

With assistance from a private security officer, the injured inspector was swiftly transported to Ota General Hospital, where doctors confirmed his death.

The firearm used in the incident has been recovered, and his body has been taken for an autopsy.

Commissioner of Police Lanre Ogunlowo has directed a thorough inquiry to determine whether any underlying issues, such as foul play or mental health concerns, contributed to the tragedy.

Authorities have informed Oloyede’s family, and the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Eleweran for further investigation.

The police extended their condolences to his family and colleagues, assuring that necessary support would be provided during this difficult period.
