A protest by thousands of women against herdsmen attacks in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State, turned violent after security operatives, including soldiers, police officers, and members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), confronted the demonstrators.
Reports suggest that the Enugu State government, led by Governor Peter Mbah, deployed the security forces to suppress reports of ongoing insecurity in the region.
The protest took a dramatic turn when the women captured two individuals accused of coordinating herdsmen attacks.
While one suspect managed to escape, the other was paraded through the community.
This led to the deployment of security personnel, who forcefully intervened.
One of the protest leaders, Mrs. Regina Odoh, recounted that at Eke Market, security agents blocked their movement.
When the women retreated and later returned in larger numbers, the confrontation escalated.
Security forces reportedly fired live ammunition and tear gas at the crowd, injuring several women and leaving four with gunshot wounds.
Videos from the protest captured women condemning local officials, accusing them of siding with herdsmen and attempting to silence victims rather than addressing the persistent attacks in their communities.
