Meet Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas: 10 key facts about Rivers new administrator

Following the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all members of the state legislature.

In their place, retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas has been appointed as the sole administrator to oversee the affairs of the state.

Here are ten important things to know about the man now at the helm in Rivers State:

1. Former Chief of Naval Staff

Vice Admiral Ibas served as Nigeria’s Chief of Naval Staff from 2015 to 2021, during which he implemented key reforms and strengthened the operational capacity of the navy.

2. Extensive Military Career

His journey in the military began in 1979 when he enrolled at the Nigerian Defence Academy. By 1983, he was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant and steadily rose through the ranks over the years.

3. Originates from Cross River State

Ibas hails from Nko, a community in Cross River State, which shares a border with Rivers. His appointment adds another military figure from the South-South region to a leadership role.

4. Maritime Security Expert

Throughout his tenure in the navy, he played a crucial role in securing Nigeria’s coastal waters, tackling challenges such as piracy, oil theft, and smuggling. His security background is expected to shape his administration in Rivers State.

5. Spearheaded Naval Modernization

Under his leadership, the Nigerian Navy expanded its fleet, acquired advanced warships, and improved maritime surveillance, bolstering national security along Nigeria’s waterways.

6. Held Key Leadership Roles

Before rising to the position of Chief of Naval Staff, Ibas occupied several important posts, including the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) of the Western Naval Command, a crucial unit within the Nigerian Navy.

7. Decorated Military Officer

His contributions to national defense earned him multiple military honors and commendations, underscoring his distinguished service in the Nigerian Armed Forces.

8. Contribution to Gulf of Guinea Security

Ibas was actively involved in efforts to combat piracy and illegal activities in the Gulf of Guinea, a critical region for Nigeria’s trade and economic security.

9. Assigned to Restore Stability in Rivers

With Rivers State facing political turbulence, Ibas has been entrusted with restoring governance and maintaining order while overseeing state affairs.

10. Restricted Legislative Authority

Despite his new position, Ibas does not have the power to enact laws. His role is limited to administrative duties, with the Federal Executive Council overseeing major decisions.

As Rivers State navigates this period of emergency governance, all eyes will be on Vice Admiral Ibas to see how he manages one of Nigeria’s most strategically important states.
