Explosion, fire engulfs Abuja highway after fuel tanker accident

A devastating fuel tanker accident at Karu Bridge near Nyanya, Abuja, led to an inferno and a series of powerful explosions, sending residents and commuters into chaos.

The accident occurred when a tanker, reportedly experiencing brake failure, collided with multiple vehicles.

Moments later, the crash site erupted into flames, with explosions ripping through the area. Witnesses described a scene of horror as fire engulfed cars and debris rained down.

Officials confirmed that the tanker was carrying compressed natural gas (CNG) cylinders in addition to liquid fuel, amplifying the blasts.

Reports indicate that shrapnel and fireballs shot hundreds of meters into the air, with some fragments travelling close to a kilometre from the crash site.

“I barely escaped. The flames spread so fast, and people were running everywhere. The heat was unbearable,” said one shocked survivor.

Firefighters and emergency teams arrived swiftly, battling the inferno and evacuating victims.

However, authorities have yet to release an official casualty count, though multiple fatalities and injuries are feared.

The explosions also caused heavy damage to nearby structures and vehicles, prompting authorities to assess the full scale of the destruction.

An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
