The House of Representatives has given its approval for the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, following President Bola Tinubu’s proclamation on Tuesday.
Tinubu had imposed emergency rule in response to the ongoing political crisis in the state, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly members for six months.
A sole administrator was appointed to oversee governance during this period.
According to the Nigerian Constitution, a state of emergency requires the consent of at least two-thirds of the National Assembly before it can be enforced.
During Thursday’s plenary session, Speaker Abbas Tajuddeen conducted a voice vote, and the majority of lawmakers supported the motion. He later confirmed that 243 members were in attendance.
Earlier in the session, Rep. Ali Isa JC proposed an amendment seeking to reduce the six-month emergency period. His motion was seconded by Rep. Miriam Onuoha. However, no final decision on the amendment was immediately announced.
