Meanwhile, Nnamdi Kanu is scheduled to appear before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday to take a fresh plea in his ongoing trial for treasonable felony.
His case has been reassigned to Justice James Omotosho following the recusal of Justice Binta Nyako, whom Kanu accused of bias.
Kanu’s lawyer, Alloy Ejimakor, had earlier commended the CJN for intervening in the reassignment of the case, following initial resistance from the Chief Judge of the High Court, Justice John Tsoho.
The IPOB leader was first arrested in Lagos on October 14, 2015, upon his return from the United Kingdom.
He was granted bail on health grounds in April 2017 but fled the country after soldiers raided his residence in Abia State.
In June 2021, he was re-arrested in Kenya and forcibly brought back to Nigeria, leading to his continued detention by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The Court of Appeal had ordered his release in October 2022 and dismissed the charges against him, but the Supreme Court overturned this decision in December 2023, allowing the Federal Government to proceed with the trial on a seven-count charge.
