President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the National Assembly for approving the State of Emergency in Rivers State, calling it a crucial step toward restoring stability after a prolonged political crisis.
In a statement on Thursday, Tinubu praised Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and other lawmakers for prioritizing security and governance over partisan interests.
He noted that the legislators carefully reviewed classified security reports before endorsing the emergency measure, which he described as necessary to prevent further escalation.
“The crisis in Rivers State was at a perilous tipping point, threatening the security of vital oil and gas installations and undermining the national economy and the significant progress we have made in the reforms initiated since our administration commenced in May 2023,” Tinubu said.
Reaffirming his position from his March 18 address, he explained that the near-collapse of governance and the risks to federal assets made the emergency declaration unavoidable.
According to him, the six-month intervention will help protect key infrastructure, restore democratic accountability, and stabilize the state.
The President assured that the newly appointed Sole Administrator would focus on rebuilding governance structures and fostering reconciliation among political stakeholders.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working with the National Assembly to promote peace, economic resilience, and national development.
“Today’s decision exemplifies what our nation can achieve when unity of purpose and patriotism guide the action of leaders.
“We remain steadfast in pursuing a safer, more prosperous Nigeria—one where every citizen’s potential is safeguarded and nurtured,” he added.
Tinubu called on all stakeholders to support efforts to restore normalcy in Rivers State.
