There is growing unease in the Niger Delta following reports that militant leaders have gathered in a secret creek location to plan coordinated attacks on oil infrastructure.
This comes shortly after President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, effectively suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
As reported by Vanguard, while specific details remain unclear, a reliable source indicated that militant leaders are engaging in widespread consultations with various groups in the region to ensure collective action.
Commander Bibi Oduku, Commandant General of the Riverine Security (Coast Guard of the Federation), confirmed the increased security threats in the area and warned of the potential economic implications. He called on President Tinubu to reconsider the decision to suspend Fubara, stating that rising tensions could trigger attacks on federal government assets.
“Various militant groups are plotting to target government properties across the Niger Delta, and criminal elements may take advantage of the situation to carry out unlawful activities. This could lead to casualties among civilians and security personnel deployed to maintain order,” Oduku cautioned.
Despite the threats, he assured that riverine security personnel remain on high alert and will collaborate with the military and other agencies to prevent any unauthorized actions.
Captains Eric Foutoru and ThankGod Oprom, responsible for overseeing waterways in Rivers and Delta states, also pledged their commitment to working with security forces to maintain stability in the region.
Oduku referenced remarks by former Presidential Amnesty Coordinator, Brigadier General Paul T. Boroh (retd.), urging youths in the Niger Delta to resist reacting out of anger.
“President Tinubu does not support violence, and young people should avoid actions that could put lives and property at risk,” he advised.
Condemning recent acts of pipeline sabotage in Rivers and Akwa Ibom states, Oduku vowed that security operatives would track down those responsible. He further urged residents of the Niger Delta to remain peaceful and allow legal processes to take their course.
