Dr. George Nwaeke has resigned as the Head of Service of Rivers State, according to an official announcement made on Tuesday.
His departure was confirmed in a statement by Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, the Chief of Staff to the state’s Sole Administrator.
The statement praised Nwaeke for his service during his brief tenure and wished him success in his future pursuits.
In the meantime, Dr. (Mrs.) Iyingi Brown, who previously served as the Permanent Secretary for Welfare in the Office of the Head of Service, has been appointed as the acting Head of Service until a permanent successor is appointed.
Vice Admiral Ibas assured the public of his administration’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in Rivers State.
Nwaeke’s resignation comes amid heightened political tensions following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
The president’s move, which led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the State Assembly, has been met with strong opposition from political leaders, civil society organizations, the Nigerian Bar Association, and the Nigeria Labour Congress.
