Gas explosion leaves two dead, 12 injured

A gas explosion at Inner Galaxy Steel Company in Umuahala Obuzor, Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, has resulted in the deaths of two people, while 12 others sustained injuries.

According to sources, the incident was caused by a faulty valve at the gas plant, which led to a powerful explosion.

The injured individuals were quickly taken to a medical facility in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where they are receiving treatment.

Upon learning of the incident, the Chairman of Ukwa West LGA, Pastor Dike Nwankwo, visited the site to assess the situation. He confirmed that all those affected were customers of the company.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Rev. Ihunanya Johnson Nwosu, the chairman refuted reports claiming that 20 people had lost their lives, clarifying that only two fatalities had been recorded.

“Upon receiving the report, Pastor Dike Nwankwo immediately went to the scene to evaluate the situation. He engaged with emergency responders, facility management, and staff to ensure that those injured received prompt medical care,” the statement read.

Emergency teams responded swiftly, evacuating the injured to a hospital in Port Harcourt for urgent treatment.
