The Campaign for Democracy (CD) has criticized the actions of suspended Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, accusing her of engaging in activities that could harm Nigeria’s reputation.
The group alleged that instead of pursuing her suspension through democratic means, she has embarked on a smear campaign against the Senate.
In a statement released on Thursday, CD described Akpoti-Uduaghan’s recent engagements both within and outside the country as inappropriate, insisting that her conduct amounted to “gross misconduct” for which she should apologize.
It urged political leaders to prioritize national interest over partisan considerations, particularly on sensitive matters.
The organization also condemned her attempts to link her suspension to allegations of sexual harassment against the Senate President, arguing that her participation at the Inter-Parliamentary Union without official endorsement violated diplomatic protocols and misrepresented Nigeria.
Expressing disappointment, CD noted that despite taking legal action, Akpoti-Uduaghan opted for media campaigns and international lobbying instead of allowing due process to unfold.
The group warned that such actions could weaken Nigeria’s democratic institutions and erode public trust.
Additionally, CD backed the ongoing recall process initiated by Kogi Central constituents, emphasizing that democratic accountability ensures that lawmakers remain answerable to the electorate.
It reminded elected officials that their positions are not permanent but are dependent on public trust and service.
The organization urged Akpoti-Uduaghan to reconsider her approach, maintain the dignity of her office, and work towards fostering national unity rather than engaging in international disputes.
It also called on Nigerians to promote dialogue and constructive engagement in resolving political disagreements, emphasizing that personal grievances should not overshadow the country’s global reputation.
