Strike: Nigerian government, ASUU in closed-door meeting

The Federal Government delegation and the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are holding a closed-door meeting to address the ongoing crisis and prevent a strike by the union.

The meeting, which began at around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, is taking place in the office of the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman. The Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, and other top ministry officials are part of the federal government’s team.

ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, who led the union’s delegation, told newsmen that the meeting aims to deliberate on unresolved issues affecting the universities in order to prevent the planned strike actions.

“There are many outstanding issues within the system that we believe should have been addressed by now. These issues should have been resolved in line with the promises made by President Bola Tinubu, ensuring no strike in the university system. We hope this meeting will resolve some of these issues so we can move forward as a country and as a university system,” he said.

Earlier, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, stated that the meeting would provide an opportunity for both parties to discuss issues affecting the university system. He mentioned that ASUU had previously written to the ministry, outlining various concerns and issues impacting the universities and the union.

According to Mr. Mamman, these issues require dialogue between the union and government officials to prevent any proposed strike by the union.
