Man dies after dispute at Abuja market, suspect arrested

A man, Ifeanyi Chukwu, has died following an altercation with Onu Simeon at Utako Market in Abuja.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested Simeon in connection with the incident.

According to the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the fight occurred on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, around 9:30 a.m.

Police received a distress call about the altercation and swiftly dispatched officers to the scene.

Upon arrival, they found Chukwu unconscious on the ground and rushed him to the NNPC Hospital in Utako, where he was confirmed dead by a doctor.

Adeh stated, “At about 09:30 AM on February 5, 2025, the Command received a distress call about a fight in Utako Market. Police operatives promptly responded, finding Ifeanyi Chukwu unconscious.
He was immediately taken to NNPC Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.”

Preliminary investigations revealed that the dispute between Simeon, a resident of Anguwan Biggy in Jabi Daki Biyu, and Chukwu, from Kuchigoro, Lugbe, stemmed from a disagreement over space to display goods at the market.

The situation escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Chukwu suddenly collapsed.

Adeh continued, “The dispute began over a space to display goods for sale and led to a physical altercation, during which Chukwu collapsed and lost consciousness. His body has been transferred to a general hospital for further investigation, while Simeon remains in police custody.”

The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, has called on residents to resolve conflicts peacefully and warned that violence can have devastating consequences.

The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
