Driver sentenced to 15 strokes of cane for assaulting police officer

A Chief Magistrate Court in Kaduna State has sentenced a 36-year-old driver, Mustapha Aminu, to receive 15 strokes of the cane after being found guilty of assaulting a police officer on duty.

Aminu, a resident of Ungwan Sanusi in Kaduna, was convicted for striking Sergeant Adamu Maigari on the head with a log of wood.

After pleading guilty to the charges, Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel emphasized that the punishment was intended to make Aminu realize the seriousness of his actions.

“This serves as a deterrent to others who may consider engaging in similar offenses. I hereby order a court official to administer 15 strokes of the cane,” the magistrate ruled.

Additionally, he cautioned the convict against assaulting law enforcement officers and urged him to conduct himself as a responsible citizen.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, informed the court that the incident occurred around 2 p.m. on January 29. He explained that Aminu had been driving recklessly when Sergeant Maigari stopped him, but instead of complying with traffic regulations, he attacked the officer.

Leo further stated that Aminu’s actions violated Section 237 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
