Akinremi calls for increased women’s data inclusion in Nigeria

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world in celebrating International Women’s Day 2025, experts have emphasized the urgent need for greater data inclusion for women, highlighting its impact on economic growth, governance, and social development.

Dr. Gabriel Akinremi, a digital governance expert, has called for more deliberate efforts to bridge the gender gap in data access and utilization, noting that many Nigerian women are still excluded from the digital economy due to socio-cultural barriers, digital illiteracy, and limited internet access.

“In today’s world, data is a powerful tool for decision-making and economic empowerment, yet women in Nigeria face significant obstacles in accessing and benefiting from it,” Akinremi stated.

He explained that data inclusion allows women to participate in financial services, access better social services, and have their voices represented in governance. However, challenges such as the digital divide, cultural restrictions, and privacy concerns continue to hinder progress.

“Nigerian women still struggle with basic access to smartphones and reliable internet, making it difficult for them to engage fully in digital opportunities,” he added. “Beyond that, privacy concerns such as data breaches and online harassment discourage many from using digital platforms.”

Despite the introduction of the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) in 2019, Akinremi noted that enforcement challenges and low public awareness have limited its effectiveness in protecting women’s data rights.

To address these issues, he recommended expanding digital literacy programs for women, strengthening legal protections, and ensuring that policies reflect gender-specific data needs. He also called for collaboration between government agencies, private companies, and civil society organizations to promote ethical data practices and enhance women’s participation in the digital economy.

“As Nigeria moves towards a more data-driven future, ensuring women’s full participation is crucial. With the right policies and protections in place, women can thrive in the digital economy while maintaining control over their privacy and security,” he concluded.
