JUST IN: Lawmakers consider Tax exemption for military personnel

The House of Representatives Committee on Finance has proposed exempting military personnel in Nigeria from paying personal income tax.

Committee chairman Abiodun Faleke made the announcement on Thursday during a legislative session where lawmakers reviewed four tax bills submitted by President Bola Tinubu in October 2024.

Faleke justified the proposal by highlighting the essential role of military personnel. “Mr Speaker, honourable colleagues, the committee proposed that personal income of military personnel should be exempted from tax.

This is because of the critical nature of their assignment,” he said.

The recommendation received unanimous backing from committee members.

On the same day, the House moved into the Committee of the Whole to conduct a detailed clause-by-clause review of the tax bills.

Earlier in the week, Faleke had presented a report on a three-day public hearing regarding the proposed legislation.

The report incorporated insights from stakeholders and analyzed memoranda submitted during the discussions.

One of the bills under consideration seeks to establish guidelines for revenue assessment, collection, and management at the federal, state, and local government levels while also defining the powers and functions of tax authorities.
