Terrorism suspects denied bail over alleged links to Bello Turji’s bandit network

A Federal High Court in Abuja has refused bail to four men accused of aiding the criminal activities of infamous bandit leader Bello Turji.

Delivering the ruling on Friday, Justice Emeka Nwite cited the gravity of the charges against the suspects, stating that their release could jeopardize the legal process.

He affirmed that the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) had successfully demonstrated that the accused posed a risk of tampering with evidence and witnesses or committing additional crimes.

The suspects—Musa Kamarawa, Abubakar Hashimu (also known as Doctor), Samuel Chinedu, and Lucky Chukwuma—face an 11-count terrorism charge, which they have denied.

Prosecutors allege that between 2018 and 2022, they conspired to provide logistical and financial support to terrorist factions led by Turji, Kachalla Halilu, Danbokolo, and others.

Evidence presented in court suggests that the accused supplied military uniforms, drugs, and construction materials to bandit camps across Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kaduna states. One of the charges also alleges that in 2021, Kamarawa and two fugitives acquired a military truck from Libya for ₦28.5 million and delivered it to a terrorist leader.

The suspects were first detained on December 23, 2024, pending trial. The case, officially filed by the Federal Government on December 16, 2024, remains ongoing, with four additional suspects still at large.
