BREAKING: Protests break out in Rivers community over Wike’s planned visit

Tensions have flared in Abalama, Rivers State, as residents staged protests ahead of the anticipated visit of former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The demonstration follows a decision by the town’s traditional ruler, King Dr. A. B. Big Tom Tom JP, to reject plans for a Thanksgiving Service and Civic Reception in Wike’s honor.

In a letter sent to the Rivers State Commissioner of Police on March 12, 2025, the monarch cited rising political instability and security concerns as reasons for opposing the event.

He also expressed frustration over learning about the gathering through Facebook despite being the highest-ranking leader in the community.

“My council of chiefs and I have agreed that no political event should take place in Abalama due to the ongoing crisis in Rivers State. I even made a radio announcement to make this clear,” the letter read.

Footage circulating on social media shows demonstrators, including women and youths, carrying placards denouncing Wike’s visit. Some protesters blocked roads, disrupting movement within the area.

The unrest underscores the escalating political feud between Wike and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, which continues to cause divisions in the state.
