Political tension turns deadly as youth leader murdered in Imo

Violence erupted in Umusi Olokwa, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, following the election of a new youth leader, resulting in the tragic murder of Stanley Nwoke.

Nwoke, who had just been declared the winner of the January 3, 2025, poll, was ambushed and killed on Saturday night.

The attackers also left four of his siblings injured and set nine houses ablaze.

Community sources revealed that unrest had been brewing over the election results, ultimately leading to the deadly assault.

In reaction to the incident, Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, visited the community on Sunday to evaluate the destruction.

According to State Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, the Commissioner condemned the killing and assured that justice would be served.

Initial investigations pointed to a faction reportedly led by Chinaza Nwachukwu and others, who remain at large.

Authorities have arrested four suspects, while a manhunt is ongoing for others involved.

CP Danjuma reassured the community that normalcy had been restored and security measures had been strengthened.

He also called on local leaders to embrace peaceful resolutions and warned against using violence to settle political disputes.

Meanwhile, the deceased has been taken to the morgue, while the injured victims are receiving medical treatment.
