BREAKING: PDP Govs fault Tinubu over Rivers emergency rule, demand immediate reversal

Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have strongly opposed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, describing it as unconstitutional and a direct attack on democracy.

Tinubu’s announcement, made in a nationwide address on Tuesday, resulted in the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all state lawmakers for six months.

He appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as the interim administrator to oversee the state’s affairs.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the PDP Governors’ Forum, led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, accused Tinubu of aggravating the political situation in Rivers instead of resolving it.

They particularly condemned his failure to address the role of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike in the crisis, arguing that Wike had been allowed to act with impunity under Tinubu’s watch.

The forum denounced the move as a dangerous precedent that could erode Nigeria’s democratic system.

They warned that Tinubu’s actions could fuel instability, worsen political conflicts, and negatively impact the economy and security of the nation.

Furthermore, the governors echoed concerns raised by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), stating that any declaration of a state of emergency must align with constitutional provisions.

They vowed to challenge the president’s decision in court, describing it as an abuse of power.

Calling for an immediate reversal, the PDP governors urged Tinubu to listen to reason and uphold democratic principles before further damage is done to Nigeria’s political landscape.
