Peter Obi condemns Tinubu’s action in Rivers, calls it unconstitutional, dangerous

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s alleged removal of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, describing it as a reckless and unconstitutional act that threatens Nigeria’s democracy.

Obi warned that the decision undermines the rule of law and reverses the country’s democratic progress.

“This move is not just reckless—it is a deliberate attempt to erode democratic governance and tighten control through unconstitutional means,” Obi stated.

He argued that the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State does not justify removing an elected governor, stressing that such an action contradicts the 1999 Constitution.

“A state of emergency does not grant the president the power to unilaterally remove a governor. This is a dangerous precedent that could push the country towards lawlessness,” he added.

Obi called on the National Assembly and other stakeholders to intervene, warning that allowing such actions to stand would further entrench impunity in Nigeria’s political system.

“A new Nigeria is possible,” he concluded.
