FG to develop 500 hectares for ranching, dairy farming in Benue

The Federal Government is set to clear 500 hectares of land in Benue State to support ranching and dairy farming.

This was revealed by the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, during his visit to the Benue Livestock Investigation and Breeding Centre in Raav, Gwer East Local Government Area.

Maiha explained that while the centre covers 2,400 hectares, the initial phase will focus on 500 hectares to prepare pasture ahead of the rainy season.

He expressed concern over the facility’s current state, noting that despite its vast land, it only houses 37 animals and requires significant rehabilitation.

To address this, a committee will be established to map out development strategies.

The government plans to introduce dairy and ranching enterprises, alongside necessary infrastructure such as animal pens, isolation units, maternity areas, and accommodation facilities.

The centre will also collaborate with Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, to enhance research efforts.

Speaking on the initiative, the Director-General of the Benue Bureau for Livestock Development, Dr. Aondoakaa Asambe, stated that the project aligns with the state’s goal of using ranching to improve security and enable farmers to return to their lands.

He emphasized that strengthening the livestock industry would provide economic benefits to the people.

Dr. Asambe also commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for his support in advancing livestock development in the state.

As part of his tour, the minister also visited the Benue Swine and Crop Improvement Project in Yadev, Gboko LGA, and the International Cattle Market in Makurdi.
