A 31-year-old Nigerian, Adimabua Chukwuka, is facing a potential life sentence after being charged with the first-degree murder of a 60-year-old homeless man, Mario Ferreira, in Toronto, Canada.
Chukwuka was arrested last Friday by the Toronto Police Service’s 52 Division following a public tip.
Authorities allege he attacked Ferreira without provocation, leading to the victim’s death.
On March 20, University of Toronto Campus Safety officers discovered an unconscious man near 144 College Street.
Emergency responders arrived, but Ferreira was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detective Trevor Grieve reaffirmed the department’s dedication to justice, urging anyone with relevant information to come forward. Police released a photo of the suspect on March 21, leading to Chukwuka’s swift arrest.
According to security footage, Ferreira was lying on a bench near 6 Queen’s Park Crescent at about 5:20 a.m.
when Chukwuka allegedly armed himself with debris—likely from a construction site or dumpster—and launched a violent, unprovoked attack before fleeing.
Investigators are still reviewing footage and gathering evidence.
Under Canadian law, first-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence, with no parole eligibility for at least 25 years.
If convicted, Chukwuka faces life imprisonment.
