Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong takes blame for costly mistake against Zimbabwe

Nigeria’s Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has accepted full responsibility for his error that led to Zimbabwe’s late equalizer in their 1-1 draw on Tuesday.

The experienced center-back was caught out of position in the build-up to Zimbabwe’s goal, sparking criticism from fans and pundits alike. However, Troost-Ekong has taken the blame for the mistake, assuring fans that the team remains focused on securing a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“I take full responsibility for the error that led to Zimbabwe’s goal,” Troost-Ekong said. “I apologize to my teammates and the fans for my lapse in concentration.”

Despite the setback, Troost-Ekong, who won the Most Valuable Player award at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, remains optimistic about Nigeria’s qualification hopes.

“We remain focused on our goal of securing a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” he said. “We will learn from our mistakes and work towards improving our performance in the remaining matches.”
