The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has stated that expressing criticism should not be considered a crime.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, SERAP condemned the alleged harassment of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ushie Uguamaye, who reportedly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration in a viral video while highlighting the country’s economic challenges.
SERAP called on the Tinubu administration to direct the NYSC leadership to halt any form of intimidation against Uguamaye.
“Everyone has a right to criticize their government without fear of reprisals. Freedom of expression is a fundamental right. We’ll see in court if the threat is not immediately withdrawn,” the statement read.
The organization further urged the NYSC board to stop treating criticism as an offense and ensure Uguamaye’s safety and security.
