Osun under tension as Ilobu-Ifon crisis worsens

The lingering boundary dispute between the Ilobu and Ifon communities in Osun State has escalated into widespread violence, affecting Erin Osun and leaving many residents displaced.

The conflict, which began on Friday, March 22, 2025, has resulted in deaths, property destruction, and a mass exodus of people seeking safety in neighbouring towns.

In response, the state government imposed a 24-hour curfew and deployed security forces to curb the unrest.

While the exact death toll remains unclear, Ifon town’s media aide, Adekunle Yusuf, confirmed that at least three people had died in the clashes.

Houses and businesses have been torched, leading to significant financial losses.

As the crisis deepened, the Erin Osun Progressive Union raised concerns about the role of soldiers deployed to the area.

The union’s president, Kayode Olawale, accused the troops of bias, alleging that they allowed Ilobu residents to attack properties in disputed areas.

“One of our residents shot by the soldiers later died in the hospital, while two others remain in critical condition,” Olawale stated.

“The military presence has not stopped the violence; rather, it has enabled the destruction of our community.”

However, the Ilobu-Asake Development Union refuted these claims, insisting that Erin Osun hoodlums had deliberately orchestrated attacks on Ilobu.

According to IDU President Olufemi Salako, the conflict had already displaced over 100,000 people and inflicted damages worth more than N2 billion.

In light of the humanitarian crisis, the Yoruba Youth Socio-Cultural Association has called for a swift government response.

The group’s coordinator, Sesan Opadoyin, urged Governor Ademola Adeleke to ensure an impartial resolution while prioritizing security and justice.

“This conflict is tearing families apart and stalling development,” Opadoyin remarked. “The government must hold perpetrators accountable and work towards genuine peace-building.”

He further appealed to youths in the affected communities to reject violence and embrace dialogue, emphasizing that the long-term stability of Osun State depends on peace and cooperation.
